The media mogul stated he endorsed the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader in his personal capacity, which he said was within his civil rights.
Speaking at Kasarani Stadium on Friday, December 10, during the Azimio la Umoja convention, the billionaire said he had taken the bold step as a courageous, responsible citizen.
“I stand before you today in my personal capacity as a participant and a witness to many struggles of our country. For many years now, I have taken the very courageous, honest, open and public step of making a very clear separation between myself SK Macharia as a responsible citizen and my businesses that include broadcast media companies,” he said.
“I am therefore exercising my constitutional right to political participation as a responsible and a free citizen. My political views and preferences are therefore completely independent of my businesses which impartial and highly competent professionals manage,” he added.

The influential tycoons who include Equity Bank founder Peter Munga said they settled on the ODM supremo as their preferred presidential candidate ahead of the 2022 General Election.
On three occasions, Mt Kenya Foundation (MKF) had previously backed President Uhuru Kenyatta and his predecessor Mwai Kibaki’s campaigns against Odinga.
The endorsement marks a remarkable turnaround in fortunes that has seen the opposition leader’s presidential bid finally embraced by a section of the Mt Kenya region.
According to the foundation’s chair, Peter Munga, the billionaires will also name Odinga’s running mate in February 2022.
“After meeting with the possible contestants on the ‘Handshake’ team [supporters of the March 2018 political deal between the president and Odinga], we have agreed to back Odinga,” Munga said.
